Cycling and Coaching: Lessons from the Road

Last weekend, I took part in my third Great Pumpkin bicycle ride near Washington, DC. It’s a 𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘦, not a race — 112 km (64 miles) of scenic, hilly roads and, this year, perfect cycling weather. Along the way, I had plenty of time to think… and my thoughts turned to the similarities between cycling and coaching.
Cycling demands endurance, adaptability, and the awareness to know when to push and when to ease off—conserving energy for the next hill, even when you can’t yet see it.
Coaching is much the same. Growth unfolds in stages, and it’s just as important to know when to challenge yourself and when to recover—and to trust the process, even when the next climb hasn’t yet revealed itself. As a coach, my role is to help you find that balance.
Here’s to moving forward — one ride, one session, one breakthrough at a time. When will your next climb reveal itself?
